With the 3D printing industry ramping up and improving on scale, speed, and cost, companies will need to look at the impacts this new industry vertical will make on their bottom line. One company in particular, has the opportunity to lead the charge and create an 'Apple-like' revolution. LEGO, which 1/3 of American children have owned or played with in their lifetime, has two choices to make. Litigation for every designer and tinkerer that reverse engineers pieces that work with their product, or take advantage of the opportunity to reinvent themselves. The latter would include the potential of buying a LEGO branded 3D printer from physical retail outlets like Toys R Us or Best Buy, and creating an online store akin to iTunes that would allow the consumer to download unique sets or pieces that are designed and controlled by LEGO. These sets may be unique only to their 3D Printer consumer base, or to the world. These set designs could easily be controlled on the number of times they are printed or copied using similar digital signatures and certificates used in DRM for music. This new arena would position LEGO as a leader in the field they are already accustomed to, and create a new era in toy distribution for consumers for the next decade or more. Two years from now, 3D Printers will be where desktop printers were a year ago. You will most likely get one free with the purchase of a separate big ticket item. Embrace it LEGO, and lead the way to a new revolution.
